Table Mountain

Table Mountain -a gigantic "table" sitting on top of the plains

As an iconic image appearing on countless postcards from South Africa, Table Mountain is practically the symbol of Cape Town. It is a vast mountain at an elevation of 1,086
meters sitting on top of a plain with a level summit that looked as if the top has been shaved off, and hence the name. Table Mountain is truly majestic in its grandeur; regardless of where you are in Cape Town, you will be able to see the cloud covered Table Mountain simply by looking up.

Table Mountain is a part of the Cape Peninsula National Park and it is also the most well known mountain range in South Africa. The plateau of Table Mountain is level like a desktop, approximately 3 km from side to side. It is also a safe heaven for more than 1,470 species of flora (most of which are endemic, like the rare Silver Trees and the Disa Uniflora).
Visitors with a penchant for hiking may choose to traverse the mountain on foot. Alternatively, one can also take the cableway as a convenient and comfortable means of transportation to get to the top of the mountain. The Table Mountain Cableway became operational in 1929 and has served countless tourists since its inception. In an attempt to improve safety and service quality, it went through an extensive upgrade in October 1997.

The entire ride to the top of the mountain takes only six minutes, and the view along the way is nothing less than breathtaking (which also prepares you for the unbelievably panoramic view from the summit). When you alight the cable car, the first thing that will strike you is the strength of the wind at the altitude. Fortunately, the strong winds will do little to affect your appreciation for the stunning view of Cape Town in its entirety. Remember to take deep breaths here; the air at the summit is fresh and rejuvenating.

If you are a fan of mountain climbing, Table Mountain is just the right spot for you. Tourists can inquire details of mountain climbing at Table Mountain with the Mountain Club of South Africa.
Please be reminded that due to the potential dangers of mountain climbing, visitors should not attempt to climb the mountain without professional assistance.
