A safe haven for wild life- Kruger National Park

Apart from being the world's oldest game reserve, Kruger National Park also happens to be the most renowned national park around the globe. The southern end of the park runs straight
into the eastern portion of Mpumalanga Province while its northern tip extends all the way to Limpopo. Established by Boer Republic's last Governor Paul Kruger in 1898, the Kruger National Park is one of the world's ten largest national parks. In light of rampant and unrestrained hunting of game animals by man, Kruger came to be aware of the sharp decline of wildlife population. He once said, "If I don't do something to preserve this natural habitat for these wildlife, our future generation will never get the chance to see elands, kudus and lions…"

As stated earlier, Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa. But just how big is it? Here are some numbers that will be useful to illustrate its vastness: the entire reserve runs over a span of 350 km from north to south, and 65 km from east to west. In other words, we are looking at a surface area of approximately 22,000 km2 in size. To put things in perspective, the size of Hong Kong is only 78.40 km2, and Kruger National Park is approximately five or six times larger than Hong Kong. (In fact, Kruger National Park is larger than Israel in terms of size and it is about the same size as Wales in England).
Today, there are a total of 18 national parks in South Africa, and Kruger National Park is the most established among them. Not only that, Kruger National Park is also a leading game reserve around the world in terms of its achievements in animal conservation, ecological tour and environmental protection related technologies and researches.

 In 1998, South Africa National Park Administration officially celebrated Kruger National Park's 100th anniversary.
In order to ensure that animals would be able to migrate freely without hindrance, the South African government deliberated the promotion of a "Peace Park" project that would extend the eastern borders of Kruger National Park towards the domain of Mozambique and the northern borders to the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe. The Peace Park project will effectively expand the land area of the park to a staggering 95,712 km2 to seal its status as the largest game reserve in the world. The completion of the project would also finally resolve controversial issues such as the costly process of animal screening and relocation .

Being the largest natural game reserve in the world, Kruger National Park is the home to an unrivaled number of fauna and flora species with:
★ 300 species of trees;
★ 50 species of fish;
★ 33 species of amphibians;
★ 507 species of birds;
★ 114 species of reptiles;
★ 147 species of mammoths.

Lions- there are approximately 1,500 lions living at Kruger National Park. Most of the lions can be found resting at the central region of the park close to the Crocodile Bridge and Lower Sabie. During the daytime, lions are fond of resting under the shades and they are mainly active at dawn and evening. Female lions are typically responsible for most of the hunting in a pride of lions. When the entire pride goes out on a hunt, the male will often pursue the prey while the females would ambush at another spot and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike. Sometimes, these big cats would also fan out to enclose their prey. Apart from using more than 50 different vocalizations, lions are able to communicate with body languages and facial expressions. For those wishing to learn more about this majestic feline, arrange a trip to South Africa and include Kruger National Park as an item on the itinerary; the experience is guaranteed to be a unique and unforgettable one.
